Description:

"Apotheosis of George Washington & Benjamin Franklin" Copperplate Printed Toile Fabric

A large textile swatch depicting the "Apotheosis of George Washington & Benjamin Franklin." The red and cream toile pattern was copperplate printed on cotton or linen, ca. 1785-1825. The red has now faded to tan. Isolated areas of loss, scattered threadbare areas, and a few loose threads can be found as well as areas of discoloration. Else good to very good. The swatch is framed behind glass in an early bird's eye maple frame, which presents expected wear. Not examined out of the frame. The sight size of the textile is 16.25" while the overall framed size is 20" x 26.75" x 1."

At center is a triumphant George Washington driving a leopard-drawn chariot carrying a personification of America wearing a feathered headdress, and holding a staff of Asclepius in one hand, and a shield inscribed "America / Independ / ance / 1776" in the other. Fellow Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, recognizable in his iconic fur hat, can be seen at upper right in profile, while female robed figures and cherubim also populate the lush landscape.

A quilted bed cover found in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts shows the other figures and symbols which would have been found in the larger schema of "The Apotheosis" but which are excluded from our example; these include the Goddess Athena, Native Americans, the Temple of Fame, and the Liberty Tree. (See attached photo included just for reference.)

The "Apotheosis of George Washington & Benjamin Franklin" was a textile pattern commonly found during the Early Republic. The pattern mythologized and popularized the nation-building iconography of the American Revolution. This textile pattern was often found in furniture upholstery or in bed coverings or curtains.
