Ambroise Vollard Regarding Picasso Paintings, Art Dealer & Art Patron ADS

A 1p autograph document in French inscribed overall and signed by influential Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939) as "Vollard" at center. Written in Paris, France on March 15, 1926 on a single leaf of cream paper. Expected wear including toning, light paper folds, and a few wrinkles, else near fine. 8.25" x 10.5." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

Ambroise Vollard drafted this document confirming receipt of 85,000 francs from Galerie Percier, a Parisian art gallery, in exchange for two Picasso paintings in 1926, during Picasso's Neo-Classical and Surrealist period.

Translated in part:

"Received from the Percier Gallery the sum of eighty five thousand francs in this check from March 15, 1926 drawn on the National Bank of Credit No. 155106 on promise of two paintings by Picasso which are listed at the following prices:

(No 1271) woman with hair 60 000 f
cubisme [?] (1418) 25 000 f..."

Ambroise Vollard was one of the most preeminent art dealers, agents, and patrons in turn-of-the-century Paris. Vollard financially supported many of the most famous artists of the era, including Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and more. Vollard presented the first public exhibition of the young Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) in 1901. He bought Picasso pieces over the years though he never offered Picasso a contract, and there may have been some hard feelings on Picasso's part because of Vollard's lack of enthusiasm for some of Picasso's more experimental works. Nevertheless, here Vollard appears to be working as Picasso's agent in the short-term loan or permanent sale of two original Picasso paintings. A few years later, in 1930, Vollard would commission the so-called Vollard Suite from Picasso, a set of 100 etchings.

The Galerie Percier was established in 1922 by wealthy French art collector André Level (1863-1946), who had been collecting mostly modern artwork since the 1890s. Located at the intersection of Avenue Percier and Rue La Boëtie in Paris's 8th arrondissement, Galerie Percier showcased avant-garde art by such artists as Pablo Picasso, Pere Pruna, Joaquín Torres-García, and later, Alexander Calder. The gallery shut its doors in 1946.
