Description:

Kerouac Jack

Allen Ginsberg's Postcard to Jack Kerouac. Stunning Content, W. Kerouac Estate Cert.

Allen (Ginsberg), autographed photograph postcard to Jack Kerouac (with Kerouac's handwritten notes identifying each person by name alongside their image on the front of the postcard "Burroughs", "Bowles", "Orlovsky", "Ansen", "Corso", "Allen G" ). Incredible "Beat" content, 5.25" x 3.5", circa 1961 taken in Tangiers. The postcard verso is written entirely by Ginsberg who also placed an annotation on the photograph to the front of "wish you were here". Fine condition. Provenance: The piece will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executer of the Kerouac Estate by descent. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife.

Perhaps one the most extensive postcards we have handled, both in content as well as referencing most all of "Beat" poets of whom were present on this trip: William Burroughs, Paul Bowles, Peter Orlovsky, Alan Ansen, Gregory Corso, Allen Ginsberg

The letter is shown in full below and was written in Tangiers from Allen to Kerouac circa 1961:

"c/o Amer Express Athens Greece

Dear Jack -got your letter. Peter is in Istanbul, Gregory + Bill in London, I'm going alone to see Parthenon + Sphinx, + meet Peter later in India - Bill now seems  (illegible) Cosmic Zenmaster, is amazing, will be in States in Sept with Leary at Harvard- Peter gone alone to Solitude - me same. I'll write you - (illegible) magic, Paranoid season 3 months here in Tangier - everybody older wiser sadder- I leave tomorrow by $60 boat to Athens - I'll write from there- all's well- maybe man is mutating fast, that's bill's idea - thinks words are dead - I'm dead - Free - Love - Allen"

Note- Ginsberg's postcard also refers to "Leary", Timothy Leary, Godfather of Acid, psilocybin fame, and famous for experimenting with LSD in sensory deprivation tanks. Kerouac and Leary also ran in the same circles and Leary was believed to have introduced Kerouac to psilocybin.

The term 'Beat' was coined by Jack Kerouac when he compassionately noted how ‘beat’ the down-and-out working people of New York City seemed to him.
