Description:

Albert S. Johnston, Confederate, Signs with D.C. Buell, Union General

Fantastic Antebellum Texas Military Order To Condemn Stores of Bad Food, Signed by Both Union and Confederate Generals

Bi-fold letter signed as an extract of Special orders No. 88, ordered by Colonel Albert Johnston. Dated "July 15, 1856". Written on three pages, docketed to last page. Signed by future Union Major General Don Carlos Buell in dark vibrant ink as "D.C. Buell". Boldly Signed by Albert Sidney Johnston within the docket as "A.S. Johnston Col 2d Cavalry Com.g Dept". Fine condition with small stain to lower left corner.

An important look at Antebellum Texas in the drama of Texas history the period of early statehood, from 1846 to 1861. This era appears largely as an interlude between two great adventures-the Republic of Texas and the Civil War. Although these fifteen years did indeed lack the excitement and romance of the experiment in nationhood and the "Lost Cause" of the Confederacy, the events and developments during the period, however, were critical in shaping the Lone Star State as part of the antebellum South. By 1861 Texas was so like the other Southern states economically, socially, and politically that it joined them in secession and war. Antebellum Texans cast their lot with the Old South and in the process gave their state an indelibly Southern heritage. This ironic letter signed by both Johnston and Buell, would find them on opposite sides at Forts Donelson in 1862. However this letter written on a few years prior is composed as "Special Orders No.88", and describes horrid conditions of the food stores as "unfit for issue", shown in part below:

"After a careful and close examination, the Board found five hundred and three (503) barrels of flour sour and musty, one hundred and eighty seven (187) pounds of hard bread moulded and worm eaten; and one hundred and forty nine (149) pounds of peaches rotted and worm eaten, which in the opinion of the Board, renders all these stores unfit for issue, and it would respectfully recommend that they be sold. All these stores have been well and carefully stored, and the Board attaches no blame to the Acting Assistant Commissary of Subsistence in charge of them …Of the five hundred and three barrels of flour considered as unfit for issue, about two hundred were shipped from Baltimore on the Pacific in the month of January last, and commenced arriving at this Depot early in the month of May … the following are the brands of the damaged flour …Head Quarters Department of Texas, San Antonio, July 19, 1856. The foregoing report of the Board of Survey is approved and the condemned stores will, in accordance with its recommendation be sold …"

An excellent Texas Pre-Civil War Letter, signed by two important military figures who ended up on opposing sides only several years later.
