Albert Einstein ALS,''I am happy to see that a Jew is always 'en famille' wherever his steps lead him on this earth''

Albert Einstein autograph letter signed, "A. Einstein", with unique content on Jewish solidarity, as well as Einstein's ill health in the late 1920s. Two page letter, in German, on his personal bifolium stationery measuring 5.875'' x 7.375'' as folded. Single horizontal fold, light soiling to last blank page and small split at the seam. Overall in very good to near fine condition with bold, legible handwriting. Includes translation. From the son of Esther Sacher.

Einstein is well known for his work helping Jewish refugees during WWII, and this letter, written ten years prior, is an early indication of his values regarding Jewish people welcoming each other no matter where in the world they live. Einstein responds to a request from Esther Sacher to visit the German Society at Oxford University. As secretary of the Society, Sacher had reached out to Einstein to speak to their club.

His letter, in full, ''Dear Mrs. Sacher! / I didn't get an invitation from the German Club in Oxford. But even if I had received one, it would be impossible for me to come because I am so ill with my heart that I cannot even go to the Academy and the University around here, and have to live reclusively, and I cannot think of doing any travel. / In any case I thank you very much for the invitation, and I am happy to see that a Jew is always en famille wherever his steps lead him on this earth. / With friendly greetings / Yours / A. Einstein.''

He then adds a postscript, ''Maybe you should ask in the German Club where this misunderstanding stems from so that no honorable young woman should travel to the station in vain or some such, a truly terrible thought!''
