Abraham Zapruder, Filmed JFK Assassination, Signed First Day Cover from JFK's 47th Birthday in 1964

A First Day of Issue postal cover commemorating 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), postmarked on JFK's 47th birthday from Boston, Massachusetts, and signed by Abraham Zapruder (1905-1970), the Dallas dress manufacturer who captured the most complete movie footage of the assassination on November 22, 1963. Zapruder has signed the envelope as "Abraham Zapruder" near the center. Featuring a cachet of JFK's portrait, life and death dates, and famous quote from the 1961 Inaugural Address at left; and bearing a 5-cent "…And the glow from that fire can truly light the world" stamp in the postage section. Lightly toned and with mounting traces visible verso, else near fine. 6.5" x 3.625." Provenance: From the collection of Ron Hoskins, assassinologist.

Abraham Zapruder was a Ukrainian-American immigrant who co-founded a dress manufacturing concern located near Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. On November 22, 1963, Zapruder stationed himself on a cement wall, which gave him an unobstructed and slightly elevated vantage point from which to film the presidential limousine as it passed directly in front of him. Zapruder filmed 26.6 seconds, or 486 frames, of the assassination using his hand-held 8mm Bell & Howard movie camera, providing the most complete and uninterrupted footage of JFK's shooting. The film footage was of invaluable importance in the subsequent criminal investigation.
