Abraham Lincoln War-Dated DS, Great Signature!

A presidential appointment signed by 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) as "Abraham Lincoln" at lower right. Countersigned by U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873) as "S P Chase" at lower left. Signed in Washington, D.C. on February 27, 1863. On a single sheet of watermarked cream paper, partly printed and partly handwritten, and emblazoned "Abraham Lincoln / President of the United States of America" at top. With an embossed U.S. Department of Treasury seal at lower left. On the reverse, a notary public from Fond au Lac, Wisconsin witnessed the swearing-in of Lincoln's presidential appointee on March 24, 1863, who has also signed verso. Expected paper folds and overall light toning. Isolated discoloration towards the top including minor bleed-through from the notary's inscription verso. A few chipped edges. Else very good to near fine. A truly superb Lincoln signature. 20" x 16".

President Lincoln appointed Orrin Hatch of Oakfield, Center, Fond au Lac County, Wisconsin, "Assessor of Internal Revenue for the Fourth Collection District of Wisconsin". A cursory review of available historical documents reveals that Hatch was a leading citizen of his community, with ties to politics and banking.

A superb Lincoln signature gracing the bottom of a war-dated presidential appointment!
