Description:

Abraham Lincoln Funeral Broadside

[Abraham Lincoln]. Broadside, "Order of Exercises for the Public Funeral Ceremonies of Abraham Lincoln", 1p, 5.25" x 15", Rochester, April 19, 1865. Folds with areas of minor paper loss, two tears at top portion, dampstaining and toning, else in very good condition.

Text is surrounded by a black mourning border, and reads, in part, "All military officers and soldiers now or heretofore in the service of the United States, are invited to unite in the funeral ceremonies to be rendered to our late President...All vehicles, by authority of the Mayor, will be excluded from the streets occupied by the Procession during its march." Pictured in a thick black-bordered box representing the Funeral Car, which is flanked by Bearers on each side, and the Guard of Honor surrounding. Signed in print by Brigadier General John Williams, Marshal.

On April 27, 1865, in Rochester, New York, mourners gathered in the middle of the night to pay their respects to their late president. Lincoln had died on April 15, 1865, a day after he had been shot by John Wilkes Booth. A train carrying his body, as well as the disinterred remains of his son Willie, who had died three years earlier at age 11, left Washington on April 21st for the long trip to Springfield, Illinois, where the president and his son would be buried. The president's body was transported in a train car that had been built for his use. In some cities, including Philadelphia, New York, Albany and Buffalo, the president's body was taken off the train to lie in state; though, not in Rochester, where the train stayed for less than an hour. "An immense crowd of people was assembled in and about the depot when the train arrived, and a salute…was fired by a detachment of artillery on Andrews Street bridge as soon as it was known the remains were approaching."
