Description:

A Mortally Wounded Lee Harvey Oswald is Loaded Onto a Stretcher

A black and white photograph, measuring 7" x 9", Dallas, dated November 24, 1963. A UPI Telephoto of the minutes just after Lee Harvey Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby. The photograph captures Oswald being loaded onto a stretcher to take him to the hospital. On verso is attached a caption entitled "Oswald Dead", that reads in full: "Lee Harvey Oswald, accused assassin of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, is taken from ambulance to the emergency room at Parkland Hospital, November 24th after Oswald was shot while being transferred from City Hall to the Country Court House in Dallas. Oswald was shot in the left side by nightclub owner Jack Ruby, police said. Oswald, 24-year-old former Marine, died in the emergency room at Parkland Hospital November 24th, a few feet from where the late Chief Executive died."
Photograph is numbered DAP112407 - New York Bureau. Minor corner bumping. Very fine.

Oswald was arrested at a Dallas movie theater just under two hours after President Kennedy had been shot. He was taken into custody and formally charged for the murder of Officer Tippet that evening, although he was also already suspected of the murder of the president. During his two days at Dallas Police Headquarters, Oswald was repeatedly interrogated, but continued to claim he was innocent and a "patsy". On the morning of November 24, detectives escorted Oswald through the basement of police headquarters as a means to transfer him to a nearby county jail. Oswald never made it to the armored car waiting for him; he was shot in the abdomen by Jack Ruby, fell into unconsciousness, and died two hours later at the same hospital where they had taken Kennedy.
