Description:

A. Lincoln Large Rare Photo, With Superb Full Signature, Outstanding Display

LINCOLN, ABRAHAM [BRADY STUDIO] BERGER, ANTHONY. Imperial albumen photograph on mount with affixed full Lincoln signature.

Washington: 9 February 1864. Imperial albumen print on mount depicting Lincoln seated in three-quarters length with his legs crossed, a draped table with an album visible behind him. The mount with "BRADY & CO., PHOTOGRAPHERS" at bottom left and right, at center a title is likely obscured by an affixed slip signed in full "Abraham Lincoln", below the slip is the text "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1865, by M. Brady & Co. in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the District of Columbia." The image 8 1/8 x 6 1/2 inches (20.5 x 16.5 cm); the mount overall 10 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches (27 x 21.5 cm); the signed slip about 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (7 x 9 cm); matted and framed. Attractive condition overall, a stain affects the lower left corner of image and mount and the "A" in the signature, some show-through of adhesive under the name "Abraham", minor spotting to image and mount, a few bumps and toning to mount edges.

The famous "$5 bill" photograph of Lincoln, in the very rare imperial size, enhanced by his affixed signature. This portrait (known as O-92) was taken by Anthony Berger in Brady's Washington studio on February 9th, 1864, and of it Lincoln's son Tad later wrote: "I have always thought the Brady photograph of my father ... to be the most satisfactory likeness of him." In the same sitting, Lincoln was also photographed with his son Tad and in both images he is seated in the ornately carved "Brady Chair," obtained from the U.S. Congress, and in the latter image the book shown here, depicted clasped on a draped table, is opened to reveal a carte-de-visite album.

This image is rare in the larger formats, particularly on the printed mount, as it is most often encountered trimmed to an oval. This portrait was used on the $5 bill until 1928 and the profile portrait used on the U.S. penny was also taken that same day. Hamilton & Ostendorf. Lincoln in Photographs, O-92.
