A. Hamilton Finished His Historic Stint As 1st Sec. of the Treasury, He Moves Back to NY and Eliza Hands Over the Keys

1p of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 9.875", no place [Philadelphia], dated February 17, 1795. Signed twice in the third person in the text as "Mr. Hamilton" and addressed to John Nicholson Esq. He also signs his wife's name in the text "Mrs. Hamilton." As first-ever Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, Alexander Hamilton prepares to vacate his residence, following his resignation from George Washington's cabinet. Reads in full:

"Mr. Hamilton presents his Compliments to Mr. Nicholson, sends him an order on the Bank for 500 Dollars which is for nine months House Rent. A sum of 50 odd dollars has been disbursed in repairs by permission of Mr. Nicholson to Mrs. Hamilton -- which will go against remaining rent. Mr. Hamilton leaves the house on friday morning and will deliver the keys to our neighbour Mrs. De la Forest to be delivered to Mr. Nicholson whenever he will please to send for them. He does not know the usage as to the further time if any for which he will be liable having taken the house for no fixed time but of course he will be ready to conform." Hand addressed by Hamilton on verso, with additional docketing in another hand. The letter has been neatly inlaid into a larger sheet, measuring 8.5" x 11. With usual mail folds and light toning and foxing. A small amount of paper loss from where the seal was broken has been repaired.

John Nicholson had previously served as the Pennsylvania Comptroller. Alexander Hamilton tendered his resignation in December 1794 after his wife Eliza suffered a miscarriage. He returned to New York and resumed his law practice in the area so that he could be closer to his family. Despite having resigned, Hamilton still remained a close advisor and friend to the president, even going as far as to aid Washington in writing his farewell address.
