Description:

1777 Revolutionary War Surrender at Saratoga

REVOLUTIONARY WAR.  Autographed Letter Signed, "Jacob Cuyler", 1 p. with integral address leaf, Albany, October *10, 1777, 8.75" x 7.25". Expected mailing folds, minor toning, slight paper loss, else Fine.

*It has been brought to our attention by a knowledgeable Revolutionary War collector that the date is likely October 18, 1777.

Three days after the second battle of Saratoga, which resulted in the capitulation of Burgoyne's army, Deputy Quartermaster Jacob Cuyler informs Major Goess at Kinderhook that, ''This moment I have received directions from Genl. Gates to Supply the Prisoners, and those who will guard them, to the amount of six thousand, they will be at Kinderhook by Monday night, you will immediately order a man to remain on the road and  order fifty head of cattle to come to you out of the first drove he meets for to Supply them.  Capt. Spencer will bring fifty more by monday night, they will want about 400 barr. of Flour to be issued & to Support them on the road, pray what quantity have you got at the landing and at the mills, let me know before I go to bed so as that I may regulate myself accordingly. I will this Evening send a man to assist you & will apply to the Q.M.G. to send some person to procure Carriages - this is a matter of the greatest Consequence, therefore please to Exert yourself.''

An extremely early reference to the Convention Army which was surrendered by Burgoyne at Saratoga just the day before, showing the preparations that were made for their sustenance.  They were not always treated so well, however.  Most of the prisoners spent the rest of the war in captivity, often under great hardships.

The letter although seemingly routine is written days before Burgoyne's formal surrender on October 17th and points to the critical advance logistics needed to transport the captured army.
