Description:

1683 Maine Province Land Grant During Governmental Unrest

Maine Province, dated October 29, 1683. A land deed between William Palmer of York and Isaac Guttedge of Kittery, in which £23 was paid for York's half part of the land owned in Cape Porpoise, sometimes called Baston's Neck "to have & to hold ye Neck of Land, Marsh, Town grants, bought Lands, Garden Plotts &c." With two witness signatures and signed twice by Justice of the Peace Edward Rishworth. With docketing on verso. 1p, measuring 13" x 16.5". The deed has flattened folds with light toning, as well as soiling and dampstaining throughout. There are some small holes and separations at the folds, which have been repaired with archival tape and paper on verso. Boldly signed. Overall very good.

This land deed is interesting because there is no mention of the Massachusetts Bay Colony or the English monarchy within the document. Following issuance of the original land patents in 1622, the governance for the area fluctuated regularly until 1691, when what is now known as "Maine" became part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay.

Edward Rishworth Sr. (1617-1689) was born in Lincolnshire, England but immigrated and came to York in 1658. He was initially granted 20 acres of land in York but soon gained numerous additional grants and became a very large landholder, operating lumber and mill operations. On January 25, 1692, a female relative of Rishworth (either a niece, daughter, or sister), named Mary, was captured by the Indians of Acadia, along with her two children Genevieve and Mary.
