12 FDCs Signed by Noted 20th C. Artists, Including Claes Oldenburg

A small collection of 12 first day covers signed by well-known twentieth-century artists who experimented with all styles and media, including Claes Oldenburg, with a special emphasis on African-American, Jewish-American, and Native American artists. Many of the examples feature cachets. The postal covers are lightly inscribed by a former collector verso (and in the case of one, recto), else near fine. All measuring approximately 6.5" x 3.625." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

The lot is comprised of, in no particular order:

- A first day cover signed by Claes Oldenburg (born 1929), a Swedish-born American sculptor noted for public art installations featuring monumental versions of everyday objects, like bottles, pool balls, or shuttlecocks, signed as "Oldenburg" at lower right. Bearing an embossed metallic cachet after Sarzin, and a 5-cent U.S. "to the fine arts" stamp. Postmarked at Washington, D.C. on December 2, 1964.

- A first day cover signed by Joan Snyder (born 1940), a contemporary artist known for her "stroke paintings," as "Joan Snyder" at lower right. Bearing a 13-cent U.S. Christmas stamp, postmarked at Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1976.

- A first day cover signed by abstract painter Darryl Hughto (born 1943), as "Darryl Hughto" at lower right. Bearing a 13-cent U.S. Christmas stamp, postmarked at Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1976.

- A first day cover signed by Benny Andrews (1930-2006), an African-American artist who co-founded the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition, an organization which lobbied for more racially diverse artists and museum professionals in the New York City art world during the Civil Rights movement, as "Benny Andrews" near center. Bearing a 13-cent U.S. Christmas stamp, postmarked at Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1976.

- A first day cover signed by Alex Katz (born 1927), a Jewish-American sculptor, painter, and print maker, as "Alex Katz" near center. Bearing a 13-cent U.S. Christmas stamp, postmarked at Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1976.

- A Valley Forge Christmas 1977 First Day of Issue cover signed by Rackstraw Downes (born 1939), the British contemporary artist, as "Rackstraw Downs" verso. Bearing a 13-cent U.S. "Valley Forge Christmas" stamp, postmarked at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania on October 21, 1977.

- A first day cover signed by Stephen Pace (1918-2010), the contemporary artist, as "Stephen Pace" near center. Bearing a 13-cent U.S. Christmas stamp, postmarked at Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1976.

- A first day cover signed by the contemporary artist Sydney Butchkes (1920-2015), as "Sydney Butchkes" at right. Bearing a 13-cent U.S. Christmas stamp, postmarked at Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1976.

- A first day cover signed by Fritz Scholder (1937-2005), the contemporary Native American artist who experimented with pop art, as "Fritz Scholder" along the bottom. Bearing a 13-cent U.S. Christmas stamp, postmarked at Boston, Massachusetts on October 27, 1976.

- A Bicentennial Era/Colonial American Craftsmen first day cover signed by contemporary photographer Jerry Uelsmann (born 1934), as "Jerry N. Uelsmann*" near lower right. Bearing a metallic cachet after Sarzin, and an 8-cent U.S. Colonial American Craftsmen stamp. Postmarked at Williamsburg, Virginia on July 4, 1972.

- A Grandma Moses first day cover signed by Aaron Shikler (1922-2015), the Jewish-American artist who created John F. Kennedy's posthumous official White House portrait, as "Aaron Shikler" at top. With a metallic "Grandma Moses" cachet after Sarzin. Bearing a 6-cent "Grandma Moses" stamp, postmarked at Washington, D.C. on May 1, 1969.

- A Valley Forge Christmas 1977 First Day of Issue cover signed by Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000), the African-American painter who depicted contemporary scenes in a self-described "dynamic cubist" style, as "Jacob Lawrence, 5/10/78" near center. Bearing a 13-cent U.S. "Valley Forge Christmas" stamp, postmarked at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania on October 21, 1977.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
