Description:

11 Vintage Snapshots of JFK's Original Gravesite Taken During the Week Following His Interment, Featuring RFK & Eunice Kennedy

A small archive of eleven vintage color photographs depicting the original gravesite of 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) at Arlington National Cemetery. The photos are undated, but were probably taken sometime during the week following JFK's interment, ca. November 25th-November 29, 1963. Printed on Kodak photo paper. Expected edge wear and scattered wrinkles, else near fine. 3.5" square. Provenance: From the collection of Ron Hoskins, assassinologist.

Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963; he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on November 25, 1963.

The photographs depict JFK's original temporary grave site, flanked between the graves of his children Patrick and Arabella, and crowned at the top with an eternal flame. The gravesite is covered with evergreens, and surrounded by standing wreaths and floral arrangements. One day after the funeral on November 26th, a white picket fence was constructed around the 30' x 20' enclosed area. Later, a walkway was constructed around the fence to accommodate the estimated 16 million people who visited the gravesite between 1963-1966.

One of the photos shows a flag-draped caisson that presumably contained the remains of President Kennedy. Three of the eleven photos show Kennedy family members visiting the JFK gravesite in the days immediately following his interment. These include two snapshots showing Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968); and one photo showing Eunice Kennedy Shriver (1921-2009), her husband Sargent Shriver (1915-2011), and their three eldest children Bobby (b. 1954), Maria (b. 1955), and Timothy (b. 1959) carrying flowers.

A permanent John F. Kennedy memorial was designed by John Carl Warnecke (1919-2010). The new grave was consecrated on March 15, 1967.
