Description:

$1000 Absolute Money Greenback-Labor Note with Four Civil War Tokens

The note measures 8.25" x 3.25", Washington, D.C., dated July 24, 1880. A satirical note for $1000, decrying the issuing of paper money in the United States, a position held by the National Greenback-Labor Reform Party. The note shows various images of Uncle Sam cranking out paper money from the US Mint, a skull and cross-bones, and a fox greedily eyeing a flock of geese. Reads in part on the front: "Redeemable nowhere, in nothing and by nobody. The law directs that this money shall circulate freely. When this note has been spent, another may be had upon application at the U. S. Treasury." With Party quotes on verso. "Burn the Bonds. Shoot the Bondholder. Down with Capital. Vive la Commune." The note has flattened folds, with a separation at the center that has been repaired with archival tape. Light wear and soiling throughout.

Accompanied by four Civil War tokens, all measuring 0.75" in diameter, dated circa 1863. These coins were privately minted and put into circulation in the Northeast and Midwest between 1861 and 1864. The production of these coins arose from the lack of government-issued coins during the Civil War, but Congress forbade the practice by passing a law on April 22, 1864, which banned the issuance of any tokens used for currency. All the coins have expected wear, with varying degrees of rubbing and patina. Included in the group of four are the following:

1. 1863 Civil War Token. "If Anyone Attempts To Tear It Down, Shoot Him On The Spot." Obverse reads "The Flag of Our Union 1863"
2. 1863 Civil War Token. "McClellan Medal for One Cent." The obverse is a portrait of McClellan reading "Little Mack."
3. 1863 Civil War Token. "Remembrance of 1863." Obverse reads "Not One Cent"
4. 1863 Civil War Token. "J. Mahnken, 19 & 22 West St NY, Liquors & Segars." The obverse has a profile of McClellan reading "General G.B. McClellan."
