10 Cartes de Visite of Mid-1800s Opera Singers and Minstrel Performers

A group of ten cartes-de-visite of 19th-century performers, including minstrel entertainers and opera singers. All measure approximately 2.5" x 4", N.p., n.d. All of the cards have been mounted to four sheets of paper, measuring 8" x 6.5" each. Some cards have been signed by the performer, and all have been identified on the paper sheet below the image. The cards have worn corners, light toning, soiling, and spotting. Some areas of adhesive staining. The images are in very good condition overall.

Highlights from the performers include:
1. Daddy Rice, 1st Minstrel. Thomas Dartmouth "Daddy" Rice is considered the "father of American minstrelsy".
2. Adalina Patti. A highly acclaimed opera singer who remains one of the most famous sopranos in opera history.
3. Neil and Dan Bryant. Members of Bryant's Minstrels and brothers (their real surname was O'Neill). Cornelius "Neil" played accordion and flutina while Dan sang and played the banjo.
4. Isabelle Hinckley. A soprano opera singer who performed for President-elect Abraham Lincoln in February 1861. She died tragically at the age of 21.
5. A group portrait of Eph Horn, George Christy, and Dan Bryant. Christy was one of the leading blackface performers during the early years of minstrel shows in the 1840s.
